The Map geographically locates all your apiaries on an interactive map, to visualize their placement at a glance and access each one's page directly.
On the website
The Apiaries → Apiary map menu shows the same interactive map, with one marker per apiary.
On the mobile app
- In the Browse tab, select Map.
- Each apiary is shown as a marker positioned at its GPS coordinates.
- Tap a marker to open the corresponding apiary's page.
What an apiary's position is used for
An apiary's GPS position is entered once, when it is created, and is then used for several purposes:
- Visual overview of the operation's layout, useful as soon as the number of apiaries grows.
- Tracking transhumance: a moved apiary changes position on the map, making it possible to visualize the history of a herd's successive locations over the season.
- Regulatory compliance: the precise location of apiaries is information expected in the event of a health inspection (declaration of bee colony holdings).
The map is a view-only feature: to change an apiary's location, go through its management page.
How do I choose the location of a new apiary?
Choosing a location generally takes into account criteria such as access for equipment and vehicles, a nearby water source, enough sunlight, and the distance from neighboring apiaries (one's own as well as other beekeepers') to limit competition for the same floral resources. Once these locations are chosen, visualizing them all together on a map helps assess their overall geographic spread — one of the uses of this map once several apiaries have been created: spotting at a glance the areas where the operation is already well established and those that still need covering.
